Cover photo: Otani Honbyo in the Higashiyama area is a large graveyard belonging to the Jodo Shin Buddhism. Shinran, the founder of the sect was also buried here. Ohigan is celebrated twice a year on the vernal equinox day and the autumnal equinox day, and three days before and after them. People visit their family grave to clean up the gravesites, offer flowers, burn incense, and pray.
